It seems to be a yearly tradition that there is either a rumour or it’s officially up for sale. This time it is correct, Wetherspoons have listed 32 pubs up for sale and Butlers Bell in Stafford is listed as one of them.
They have tried to sell the pub on numerous occasions before, including back in 2019 which sparked a huge local outcry and a petition to save the pub.
Wetherspoon spokesman Eddie Gershon said to Stafford FM: “On occasion Wetherspoon does put some of its pubs up for sale. This is a commercial decision and we understand that customers and staff will be disappointed with it. The pub will continue to operate as a Wetherspoon outlet until it is sold.”
The Guardian reported earlier this year that the company was facing £30million in losses due to a drop in sales following the pandemic.
Share prices for the company continued to tumble following the news of the sale of 32 pubs. Share prices for the company have been going down since April of this year and have now reached levels not seen since 2012.
